July 17th Program aims to fund scholarships at Paine College

Tom Joyner, the host of a nationally syndicated radio show, will be a featured guest for Paine College's Are You Booked for Lunch? event July 17.

Radio host Tom Joyner, whose show is heard in 115 markets, will address a luncheon fundraiser for Paine College book scholarships. The event will raise money for book scholarships for Paine students, said Brandon Brown, the vice president of institutional advancement. "We are addressing one of many areas of education," Brown said. "It's important for students to be able to purchase books or software needed to perform their research and be prepared for class."

The Tom Joyner Foundation selected the college as the School of the Month for July, and the event was planned by the college and foundation to tie in with the honor, Brown said.Throughout the month, The Tom Joyner Morning Show will highlight the college and announce recipients of scholarships awarded by the foundation to Paine students.

The show airs in 115 markets and locally 6-10 a.m. weekdays on 100.9 FM, a Perry Broadcasting station. The company is a participating sponsor of the luncheon. Since 1998, the foundation has raised more than $55 million for scholarships for students attending historically black colleges and universities. Joyner's foundation is also assisting Paine with the college's campaign to raise $100,000 for scholarships. It continues through December.


The Paine College National Alumni Association kicked off the campaign with a $10,000 donation in February. Each alumni chapter has also been challenged to raise $5,000. "We wanted to make a statement that demonstrated how important this effort is, and we did not want to ask others to do something we had not done ourselves," said Dr. Silas Norman, the president of the Paine College National Alumni Association and a 1962 graduate of the school.
"It was our way of making a concrete statement that we intend to fully support this campaign," Norman said.

As of Friday, about $15,000 had been raised toward the college's goal, and officials hope the luncheon will help raise awareness about the campaign, the college and students' achievements, said Helene Carter, the assistant vice president of institutional development.

"We're hoping that the luncheon will add fuel to the campaign and help us reach at least the halfway mark by the end of July," she said.
"We are asking alumni, organizations, businesses, the entire CSRA community to get on board and help us reach our goal."

The luncheon will become an annual event for the school to help raise funds for book scholarships and keep the community informed of the college's activities, new programs and student achievements, Carter said.
