Augusta, GA)-The Paine College Chapter of Georgia Association of Educators, Student Program, (GAE-SP) recently received a grant from the National Education Association (NEA). The members of GAE-SP executive board were responsible for writing and submitting the grant. Natasha Adebiyi, Paine College GAE-SP president and GA-SP state officer, led the writing of the CLASS grant proposal.

The National Education Association offer student programs across the country an opportunity to apply for grants to fund special projects. The CLASS Grant is awarded to a select number of student programs each academic year. CLASS Grants are awarded to local chapters for community service projects that are intended to meet a community need.

“I knew that this would be an opportunity that we could not miss out on," said Adebiyi. "The executive board and I sat down and identified a program that we wanted to offer to youth in community near campus. We were fortunate to have Dr. Lindsay-Dennis, our faculty advisor, guide us through the grant writing process.”

The CLASS grant received by NEA will be used to fund a "Read Across America" Program at Wilkinson Gardens Elementary School. NEA's "Read Across America" is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. The Purpose of "Read Across America" is to motivate children to read inside and outside of school. Research shows that reading is an important factor in student achievement. Children who are motivated and spend more time reading perform better in school than non-readers.

“This grant has provided Natasha and her executive board with an opportunity to not only develop grant writing skills but also create a program that addresses youth literacy in the CSRA,” said LaShawnda Lindsay-Dennis, Paine College GAE-SP Faculty Advisor.

Paine College education majors have created a Dr. Seuss Production for Read Across America Day in March. This production seeks to encourage elementary students to read. With the grant funds, GAE-SP will also donate sets of Dr. Seuss books for lower grade level classrooms (Pre-K through 2nd grade) at Wilkinson Gardens Elementary School. Wilkinson Gardens is apart of the consortium of Professional Development Schools partnering with the Department of Education.

The CLASS grant award provides Paine College students the opportunity for service learning and strengthens our Professional Development School relationship with Wilkinson Gardens.

The Read Across America Program will be held on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Wilkinson Gardens Elementary School. This program will include fun filled academic activities for young elementary school students.
