Orangeburg, SC- “The Big Payback” is a tune by Dr. James Brown, and this year the Lions and Lady Lions of Paine College returned the favor to the Panthers and Pantherettes of Claflin University by spoiling their homecoming. Just last year, the Lions and Lady Lions lost to Claflin University on their homecoming.
In part one of the doubleheader and SIAC conference matchup, junior guard Shanee’ Butler scored 16 points leading the way for the Lady Lions of Paine College in a 62-55 win over Claflin University Saturday, November 21, 2009 in Edward L. Tullis Arena. Freshman forward/guard Antoinette McPhail (pictured) also scored a career high 12 points, nine rebounds, and five blocks for the Lady Lions (1-1; 1-0 SIAC) in the victory over the Pantherettes. The freshman from Darlington, SC opened the game with a long-range three pointer from the wing assisted by senior guard Tiffany Beverly. Senior transfer, Areyal LaDeatte, racked up on the boards grabbing a game high 13.
Later in the afternoon, the Lions (1-0; 1-0 SIAC) would not be out done, and handed the Panthers their first loss of the season. Four Lions scored double digit points, including senior guard, Julian English who started the season off in customary fashion scoring 26 points. Sophomore guard Geno Green scored 15 points and rejected four of the Panthers shots. Senior Najee Tolbert and freshman Mario Jordan chipped in 11 points each in the 70-59 win.
