Paine College Names Hercules Scholars

  (AUGUSTA, GA) – Paine College has been named as the Tom Joyner School of the Month for the month of August by the Tom Joyner Foundation. Paine College is one of eleven HBCU’s to be honored in 2012.

As one of the Tom Joyner Foundation’s “Schools of the Month,” Paine will receive funds from listeners, alumni, corporations and other interested parties during the month of July 2012 for scholarships for Paine College students. All funds raised via the Paine College/Tom Joyner Foundation Partnership will be sent directly to Paine for the students.

Every Thursday, during the month of August, Tom Joyner will announce Hercules Scholarship recipients LIVE on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. Hercules Scholarships will be awarded to five Paine College male students. The Hercules Scholarship is named after Joyner’s father, the late Hercules Joyner, who was a strong supporter of higher education. To be a candidate for the scholarship, students must be male, attend a Foundation “School of the Month” College and have a grade point average of at least 3.5.

Hercules Scholarship Recipients (Paine College):

·     Michael J. Gardner of Hephzibah, Georgia - 4.00 GPA

·     Michael A. Woodard of Atlanta, GA - 3.56 GPA

·     Davonn J. Collie of Augusta, GA - 3.69 GPA

·     Edgar L. Luciano of Augusta, GA - 3.94 GPA

·     Victor E. Tapia of Morelia, Mexico - 3.87 GPA

“We are honored be named the Tom Joyner School of the Month,” said Dr. George C. Bradley, president of Paine College.

About the Tom Joyner Foundation

The foundation was founded in 1998 by Tom Joyner, host of the nationally syndicated radio show known as the Tom Joyner Morning Show.  The Tom Joyner Foundation mission is to continue the support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with scholarship, endowment, and capacity building enhancements.  With the aid of donor development and initiatives, $60 million has been raised to support more than 20,000 students attending HBCUs. The Foundation also offers internships, matching grants support, and career development to qualifying students.
