Student-Athlete Adam Martin, is a Business Management Major and a versatile position Baseball player at Paine College. He has an impressive 3.5 GPA and beams proudly when sharing that he will be graduating in May 2017, from the Institution he says “has given him the necessary educational tools, one-on-one instruction time if needed and improved his athletic talent to be successful in life.” He is also the Paine College, 2016-2017 Male Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year. Prior to attending college, Martin lived in Aiken, South Carolina with his family. He has one sibling and believes in preserving family quality time.
“My goal was to obtain my degree while remaining close to home near my family. A friend of mine, Avery Wilson, attended PC and after our discussion about the Business and Athletic programs, I knew Paine was where I wanted to earn my degree. From the very first day, Coach Marshall has emphasized the word student in Student-Athlete. Not only is he my baseball coach but I consider him to be a friend. He and my professors, are major contributing factors of my collegiate success. They encourage and push you to excel, off and on the field. That is why I chose Paine College to further my education,” said Martin.
Adam details his Paine College experience as a “family oriented Institution that has never made him feel like a minority and always treated him with respect.” He likes the fact that professors and faculty know him personally and if a student requests extra attention with the curriculum, the educators ensure they receive it. Martin has grown during his four years at PC as a person and athlete, largely in part due to his baseball teammates that he refers to as his brothers. He is thankful for them standing by him through struggles but more importantly, helping him to continue to strive to achieve his goals athletically and academically.
Kerby Marshall, Head Baseball Coach/Asst. Men’s Basketball Coach, had the following to say about Adam; “He is the perfect baseball player that every coach dreams of, he listens and executes as he is told and is a great team player. The team looks up to him as a leader on and off the field. He also understands that he is a Student-Athlete and performs well in the classroom.” After graduation, Martin will be traveling to Canada to play Baseball.
“I would like to stress the importance of knowing what you want to do after you graduate, having a plan and working hard to attain your degree. It is important to know your weaknesses and strengths and develop them to become a better person. I am thankful for our Alumni and after graduation, I will be an active alum to continue building upon the foundation they set forth, to ensure students at Paine College are educated with integrity and distinction. It is my belief that any challenges the Institution faces, can be overcome with the support of our dedicated Alumni,” are the words of wisdom shared by Martin.
Adam discloses that he doesn’t mind watching love story movies. His favorite is “The Notebook.” When asked if he considers himself to be Ryan Gosling, (the movie’s Lead Actor) Martin smiles in approval with the comparison and says yes. On and off the field, Paine College equips its scholars with exceptional education, develops its student-athlete talent with dedicated instructors and enables its faculty to positively enhance the personal and professional lives of its student-body.
