Position Title: Director of Tutorial Services
Reports To: Provost/Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs
Terms of Employment: Twelve Months
Salary Range: $40,000
FLSA Classification: Exempt, Title III, Grant-funded Position
The Director of Tutorial Services manages the on-campus and online tutoring programs for all students and is housed within the J. Mack Gipson, Jr. Tutorial and Enrichment Center [TEC]. This includes recruiting, training, supervising, and evaluating professional tutors and the office manager. The hire of professional tutors goes through institutional processes with vetting, review, and interviews at appropriate levels. The director will implement support programs to supplement academic department efforts to improve student course performance and increase retention. The director will make recommendations and provide management in the training of professional tutors and the office manager, evaluate the effectiveness of tutoring programs, and regularly use student performance data on internal and external measures. The director works collaboratively with administrators in academic affairs, student affairs, and faculty members in the respective areas to provide content specific tutoring services and topical workshops.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Directs the daily operation of the office including supervision of the office manager and professional tutors for the Tutorial and Enrichment Center.
- Develops course-specific tutoring support used by the director and professional tutors in tutoring students.
- Seeks content advice from department chairs and faculty for course-specific tutoring.
- Provides course-specific tutoring to students in addition to professional tutors.
- Evaluates tutoring programs, monitors effectiveness, and improves quality.
- Collaborates with faculty, administration, and staff regarding student learning needs.
- Assists in coordinating retention efforts across college units under the leadership of the Provost and/or Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs.
- Provides regular written reports concerning tutoring services, student subscription, online tutoring subscription, and testing offered through the center such as Accuplacer and other products (e.g., new student, TOEFL, graduate school entrance exams – GRE, etc., online tutoring through NetTutor and TutorMe).
- Implements and assesses objectives related to the Title III funding activity.
- Prepares and submits data/sub-reports to support overall Title III funding reporting and compliance.
- Maintains website information for tutoring and academic support and the online scheduler for appointments and walk-in, same-day assistance.
- Maintains schedule of walk-in tutoring hours and group tutoring support for course subjects.
- Creates and maintains tutor schedules, walk-in and appointment tutoring hours, and arrangements for group and individual tutoring both in-person and online.
- Tracks and provides quantitative and qualitative data and information on the number of students and which students are subscribing to tutoring services for course-specific tutoring and topical workshops on a weekly, monthly, and semester basis with disaggregated information to determine repeated usage and individual subscription and type of service whether in person or online.
- Maintains FERPA compliance with records of student activity.
- Works with student affairs to plan and conduct residential workshops, tutoring course subject availability, and provide hours, directions, and resource information for new student orientation.
- Attend meetings of the faculty if and when needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Committee Assignment: Serve as a member of the Committee on Strategic Planning and Evaluation (CSPE).
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in mathematics, English, a science field [biology, physics], higher education administration, or related discipline from a regionally accredited university or nationally accredited university required; doctoral degree preferred.
- At least three years of academic advising and/or academic support experience preferable in a college/university setting.
- Previous teaching experience required at the college level.
- Experience in student centered/student focused counseling and assessment techniques required.
- Knowledge of multiple computer software applications for the office and student test assessments preferably Microsoft Office, Accuplacer, TOEFL, TutorMe, NetTutor, graduate school placement tests, and other products.
- Develop and implement calendar of tutoring sessions and record sessions for student review and referral
- Proactive, self-motivated, ability to work on a team or independently
- Effective and efficient communication, organizational and time management skills
- Must be customer focused, student friendly, and be able to communicate with internal and external stakeholders
- Ability to handle several projects simultaneously

General Working Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays and 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Fridays.
Evaluation: Annual performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the Professional Development Plan (PDP) and/or the College's evaluation instrument for staff. Periodic performance measures will be used to ascertain whether goals are achieved.
