Position Summary:  Paine College invites applications for an academic leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Media Studies with an expected start date of January 5, 2022.  The Chair will provide strategic leadership to the department, increase and enhance faculty membership, and work with faculty, staff, and students to build upon the department's strengths in teaching, research, and service.  

 

Applicants should have academic credentials commensurate with appointment to the rank of assistant professor or higher.  Applicants must have supervisory administrative experience that includes managing budgets, promoting the professional development of faculty and staff, assessing academic programs, establishing interdepartmental and interdisciplinary collaborations, and facilitating the department's contributions and outcomes consistent with the College's strategic goals. 

 

The Chair will have a strong academic reputation, have a strong record of teaching effectiveness, demonstrated ability to promote Media Studies with a specific emphasis on broadcasting, journalism, public relations, and drama.  It is expected that the Chair will be engaged in scholarship and/or creative activities that attract external funding and to provide leadership to increase the faculty's external funding.  The Chair will have service duties including program-building and committee service.  

 

Significant Duties and Responsibilities: 

The Department Chair adheres to established guidelines concerning departmental curriculum, leadership and administration, operations, budgeting, liaison functions involving personnel and students, management and department recordkeeping, meetings, and faculty responsibilities.  A succinct listing of responsibilities is listed with the understanding that other duties as assigned by the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs to assist in the advancement of the College's/Department's academic programs complete position requirements.  

 

  • - Work with faculty, students, and staff to establish and maintain both short-and-long term plans for the department consistent with the college mission and strategic plan.

  • - Manage and increase enrollment and graduation rates for departmental majors and maintain records of student and alumni progress after graduation.

  • - Assess department's progress in meeting departmental goals.

  • - Make recommendations concerning departmental programs, procedures, and practices.

  • - Ensure departmental compliance with College regulations.

  • - Communicate departmental needs with the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs.

  • - Conduct faculty evaluations and meet with faculty to communicate evaluation results and establish accountability.

  • - Complete scheduled program reviews in accordance with college policies.

  • - Complete program and course assessments as well as departmental reports for accreditation agencies. 

  • - Develop and submit class schedules, textbook orders, and course load scheduling.

  • - Review the College catalog and website for program of study currency and departmental requirements.

  • - Monitor course registrations and make appropriate adjustments for faculty teaching loads, workloads, and instructor assignments.

  • - Manage promotion and tenure and student advisement as well as maintain records.

  • - Manage and review departmental resources, funding requests, and daily operations.

  • - Teach an average of two classes during fall and spring semesters and one course each summer, as appropriate for the department and subject to change as commensurate with the needs of the College.

  • - Coordinate departmental participation in registration and orientation of students as well as advisement and degree progress.

  • - Review and approve/deny course overload, grade change, and transient credit requests.

  • - Coordinate recruiting students into departmental major(s) and concentration(s).

  • - Meet with students concerning classes, policies, faculty, as appropriate.

  • - Administer the recruitment of full-time and part-time faculty and make hiring recommendations to the Office of Academic Affairs.

  • - Evaluate promotion and tenure applications.

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • - An earned terminal degree from a regionally or nationally accredited university with a specialty in one of the teaching areas represented in the department.  

  • - A record of successful experience in teaching at the collegiate level. 

  • - A distinguished record of service and scholarship and creativity is preferred. 

  • - Previous administrative experience in an academic unit is desirable. 

  • - Previous experience with successful grant writing is preferred.

  • - Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.  

  • - A record of securing external funding.
