Philosophy & Religion
The aim of the Philosophy and Religion program is to clarify and deepen students' knowledge, appreciation and respect of the religious dimensions of human culture and experience. Concurrent with these acquisitions, students will develop their analytical skills and critical thinking. Faculty in the department seek to reinforce religious influence rather than the development of the doctrine of a certain religion. Students also learn to appreciate the fundamental roles played by philosophical inquiry in the Eastern and Western worlds.
Religion is a major factor in human culture, having shaped both the lives of its adherents as well as the societies of which it is a part. Students at Paine College will study religion as a human phenomenon and begin to understand humanity in its deepest and fullest dimensions. The courses explore religion and philosophy texts and exemplars, and the ways in which religion leaders and philosophers have formulated timeless messages and values.
