Dr. Walter T. Tillman Jr. is a licensed minister, second-generation educator, political appointee, writer, speaker and consultant on HBCUs, university administration, minority business development, fundraising, political campaigns and church governance. Over a 25+ year career, he has directly provided data driven, creative and innovative service in education, fundraising, governmental affairs, economic development, nonprofit management and community service across six states, two mayoral administrations and a cross-section of public and private educational enterprises, including a community college, an independent medical school and a law school.
Having earned the Ph.D. from Louisiana State University (LSU), a M.Ed. from the University of New Orleans, B.A. from Dillard University and membership in three honor societies, Dr. Tillman's work and scholarship elevates the competitiveness of historically Black colleges and universities as institutions that expand economic, social and political parity. As an instructor, he has taught primary, secondary and tertiary classes from the asset narrative perspective with focus on employing culturally relevant instruction. Committed to advancing his field, Professor Tillman, has created nearly a dozen (12) university courses including: Intersectionality of Education and Criminal Justice, Seminar on HBCU Leadership, and Community Change Agents: The Black Church and the Black College.
As a university administrator, Dr. Tillman employs data driven decision making to stimulate engagement, unleash creative energies, disrupt silos and achieve unprecedented student-focused results. His experiences in academic administration, strategic planning, curriculum development, accreditation, student affairs and fundraising uniquely informs his institution wide perspective.
An active community leader, Dr. Tillman is a member of the 100 Black Men of Macon/Middle Georgia and the Epsilon Beta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha. Also, he previously served on the Boards of Directors of: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., National Alumni Council of the UNCF, the National Pre-Alumni Council of the UNCF, 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge, Ltd, Opera Louisiane, Inc. and the 1925 Alpha Men of Jacksonville Foundation, Inc.
