Campus Electrician

FSLA Type: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Salary Range: $21/hr

Reports To: Director of Facilities

Terms of Employment: Full-time (Occasional evening/weekend support for school events)

Position Summary

The Campus Electrician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of all electrical systems across the school’s academic buildings, athletic facilities, and residential dormitories (if applicable). This role ensures that the campus remains bright, safe, and technologically functional while strictly adhering to the National Electrical Code (NEC) and school safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preventive Maintenance: Conduct regular inspections of electrical panels, transformers, and switch gear to prevent outages.
  • Troubleshooting & Repair: Diagnose and fix issues with lighting, ballasts, motors, kitchen equipment, and power distribution systems.
  • Special Event Support: Set up temporary power and lighting for graduation ceremonies, theater productions, and athletic events.
  • Project Management: Lead or assist in small-scale renovation projects, such as installing new EV charging stations or upgrading classrooms to LED lighting.
  • Life Safety Systems: Assist in the testing and maintenance of emergency lighting, exit signs, and backup generators.
  • Vendor Escort: Act as the technical point of contact for external electrical contractors or inspectors during major infrastructure upgrades.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Licensure: Valid Journeyman or Master Electrician license (state-specific).
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years in commercial or institutional electrical work.
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC), blueprints, and circuit diagrams.
  • Modern Systems: Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS), digital lighting controls (e.g., Lutron/Wattstopper), and energy management.
  • Safety First: Proficiency in Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and Arc Flash safety.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to climb ladders, work on scaffolding, or operate a man-lift (bucket truck).
  • Ability to work in confined spaces (crawl spaces/attics) and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions to maintain campus site lighting.
