Provost and Vice President of Academic Services

The Provost and Vice President for Academic Services (Provost) is the Chief Academic Officer for the College and serves as the second-in-command, acting for the President in his absence. The Provost will be a visionary who works collaboratively with the President, other Vice Presidents and Dean of the Faculty to oversee the educational programs and advance the academic, research and service missions of the College. The Provost oversees the policies and priorities that create, foster and sustain educational excellence across the college, including policies that support the instructional programs, guide the recruitment, selection, retention and promotion of superior faculty, and ensure the recruitment, matriculation and graduation of outstanding students. The Provost also provides institutional leadership and support for the College’s research efforts. The Provost is responsible for all academic matters, including budgetary oversight for activities affecting the educational programs and research, and achievement and maintenance of appropriate accreditations. The chief information officer will also have a dotted line responsibility to the Provost. In addition, the Provost is responsible for the Library, the Area Health Education Center, and the Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Office.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Works with the President as a member of the senior administration to articulate the Mission and Vision of Paine College.
  2. Develops and articulates the long-term vision and strategic plan for Academic Affairs within the College. In consultation with the President, oversees the implementation of this vision for the college, including providing leadership for the academic planning process and promoting the development of education and research.
  3. Advises and supports the president on college programs, policies and operations to ensure the success of the college; ensure that policies foster excellence, equity and diversity.
  4. Sets priorities for Academic Affairs that are consistent with the long-term plans of the college.
  5. Provides leadership, direction and management to the academic organizational structure of the college and articulates the roles and responsibilities of the major academic leaders within that structure along with milestones and measures against which progress can be measured.
  6. A substantial personal record in research and education commensurate with the appointment to the rank of full professor.
  7. Successful experience with the supervision of staff and the management of a multi-faceted program, including the documented ability to lead an effective academic management and leadership team.
  8. Highly developed human relation skills, leading to the ability to work well with individuals at all levels in the college.
  9. Strong planning and organizational skills.
  10. College or university level policy development.
  11. Strategic Planning experience.
  12. Understanding and appreciation of the importance of fundraising and other external forms of support
  13. Budgeting and financial management experience at the college or university level.
