ATHENS, GA — The Athens Area Paine College Club, in collaboration with community partners, proudly presents THURGOOD, the acclaimed one-man play by George Stevens, Jr., celebrating the life and legacy of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall — a towering figure in American history and the first African American to serve on the United States Supreme Court.
A Riveting Portrait of "Mr. Civil Rights"
Featuring Michael Anthony Tatmon as Thurgood Marshall and directed by Prodan Dimov, THURGOOD offers audiences a stirring and deeply human portrait of one of America's most transformative leaders. The play captures Marshall's courageous journey — from his early days as a civil rights lawyer challenging segregation in Brown v. Board of Education to his historic appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court, where he upheld the principles of justice, equality, and democracy.
With warmth, humor, and intellect, this remarkable performance invites audiences to witness the story of a man whose life's work forever changed the course of American history. In an era marked by renewed debates over justice and equality, THURGOOD resonates powerfully, reminding us of the ongoing struggle to preserve the Constitution's promise for all.

Proceeds to Benefit Education and Equality
All proceeds will support the Athens Area Paine College Club Holsey Scholarship Fund and the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) — empowering future generations through education.
———————————
The Holsey Fund is named in honor of Lucius Henry Holsey, founder of Paine College, who spent much of his childhood in Athens enslaved to a University of Georgia professor. Holsey later wrote that the college-town atmosphere awakened in him an "insatiable craving" for knowledge. Following the Civil War, Holsey became a Bishop in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and helped establish numerous churches and educational institutions — including Paine College in Augusta, founded in 1882.
