Grammy-Nominated Host Student Empowerment Gathering

Rap legend Yo-Yo, a female hip-hop pioneer, will host a student empowerment gathering called “Paine College Is out of Control with “Yo-Yo,” on Wednesday, February 5, 2020, at 11:00 AM in the Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel.

Yo-Yo, who has been lighting up stages since the ’90s, has worked with Ice Cube, MC Lyte, and Salt-n-Pepa. In addition to music, Yo-Yo has appeared in several feature films, including Boyz n the Hood (1991) and Menace II Society (1993). She also had a recurring role in the hit ’90s sitcom, Martin Last year, Yo-Yo joined the cast of Love & Hip-Hop: Hollywood.

In addition to music and acting, Yo-Yo is also an activist. She was one of the first female rappers to denounce sexism in hip-hop music. In 1990, she founded the Intelligent Black Woman’s Coalition aimed at empowering young women. In 2011, she founded the Yo-Yo School of Hip Hop based in South Central L.A.

The event is free and open to the public.
