Statement from Paine College on the Supreme Court’s Voting Rights Act Decision

Supreme Court

McCorn

Paine College expresses deep concern regarding the recent decision of the Supreme Court of the United States that significantly weakens protections under the Voting Rights Act of 1965 — one of the most consequential achievements of the Civil Rights Movement.

For decades, the Voting Rights Act has served as a moral and legal safeguard against racial discrimination in the democratic process. Yet this latest ruling — building upon earlier decisions such as Shelby County v. Holder — raises the evidentiary threshold for proving racial discrimination in voting, effectively limiting the ability of communities to challenge inequitable electoral maps and practices.

This moment must be understood not as an isolated legal development, but as part of a broader trajectory in which critical provisions of the Voting Rights Act have been steadily diminished. The Court’s new requirement that plaintiffs demonstrate intentional discrimination — rather than discriminatory impact — represents a fundamental shift away from the Act’s original purpose of preventing voter suppression before it takes root.

As an institution grounded in the legacy of the Black Church, and social and racial justice, Paine College affirms that the right to vote is not merely a legal entitlement, it is a moral expression of human dignity, equality, and full participation in the democracy for which so many suffered and sacrificed. Any erosion of that right disproportionately threatens communities of color and undermines the democratic ideals to which this nation aspires.

We therefore call upon policymakers, civic leaders, and communities of faith and conscience to:

  • Advocate for federal legislative action that restores and strengthens the Voting Rights Act
  • Promote voter education and civic engagement, particularly among historically marginalized communities
  • Defend the moral principle that democracy must be inclusive, equitable, and just

Paine College remains steadfast in its commitment to civic responsibility, ethical leadership, and the ongoing struggle for justice. In this critical hour, we echo the enduring call: the arc of the moral universe bends toward justice — but only when people of conscience are willing to bend it.
