13th President of Paine College
Shirley A. R. Lewis, an educational leader within the United Methodist Church, was elected as the 13th president of Paine College in Augusta, Georgia. Her appointment marked a historic milestone, as she became the first woman to lead the liberal arts institution in its 112-year history.
During her presidency, Dr. Lewis led several key initiatives, including modernizing academic programs, expanding technology and research efforts, and strengthening enrollment and the college’s national visibility.
She succeeded Julius S. Scott Jr., who retired at the end of June after 13 years of service as president.
